Not all omega-3 fats are created equally, nor do they have the same effects. The two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been found to bring heart-healthy benefits, regulate mood, and reduce the risk of certain diseases. However, certain types of omega-3 fats are more appropriate for certain conditions. For instance, DHA is highly recommended for pregnant women because their baby's developing brain needs all the omega-3 fats available. On the other hand, EPA is more effective at reducing inflamed joints, soothing skin conditions like psoriasis, and lowering cholesterol levels. Recently, a new study published in Nutrition, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Diseases discovered that these fatty acids affect men and women differently because of how they interact with sex hormones.
Omega-3's heart benefits come from their ability to regulate platelet aggregation - the instance where the platelets in the blood come together to form a clot. Clots are normally good when it comes to healing wounds, but they also lead to heart vessel blockage. This blockage can be prevented by using certain drugs and non-medical agents like omega-3 essential fatty acids. Although DHA and EPA have both been found to protect the heart vessel from clots, researchers are still not clear which type of omega-3 fat is more effective. Now, it seems that the efficacy varies according to gender.
Vitamin Omega 3
The researchers gave thirty healthy adults a single dose of an EPA-only and DHA-only omega-3 supplement and assessed their blood after 24 hours. Although both omega-3 fats reduced platelet aggregation, the responses differed when researchers looked at the gender groups separately. Males benefitted more from EPA than DHA and the placebo, whereas DHA worked better on women than EPA and the placebo.
These findings should spark a change in how the two types of omega-3 fats are made available in supplements. At the same time, consumers should consider their needs carefully before deciding which supplement to purchase. Although both types of omega-3 fats does much to maintain your health, soothe symptoms of long-term disorders, and prevent certain diseases, it's better to consume more of the fat that your body responds to best.
