Aside from preventing breast cancer and prostate cancer, researchers discovered that omega 3 supplements can also lower the risk of colorectal cancer by as much as 85%. On the other hand, high levels of omega-6 fatty acids can increase the likelihood of these cancers by a whopping 700%.
These findings were discovered by researchers from Japan's Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine and the Aichi Cancer Center Hospital. The study looked into the fatty acid levels in the red blood cells of 74 people with colorectal cancer and 221 blood samples free from cancer. The participants were also asked to submit information on their diets. Blood analysis revealed that those without colon cancer had higher concentrations of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a long-chain omega 3 fatty acid. Although the researchers did not examine how the relationship occurs, the lead author Kiyonori Kuriki suggests that DHA may inhibit the arachidonic acid that forms and spreads cancer cells. This study can be found in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
Vitamin Omega 3
The Shanghai Women's Healthy Study in China showed similar results. This study, which can be found in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Preventions, examined the diets, lifestyle, and health condition of 73,242 Chinese women. Those who consumed more foods with polyunsaturated fatty acids (from omega-6 fats and trans-fats) were more likely to develop colorectal cancer. Compared to women with low omega-6 to omega 3 ratios, women with the highest ratios had an associated risk of 95%.
Although colon cancer can be genetically inherited, especially for those who have a strong family history of the condition, many cases are actually caused by unhealthy lifestyles and poor diet choices. Fortunately, colon cancer can be prevented by regular screenings and a fiber-rich diet. Symptoms of colon cancer only appear during the later stages of the disease, and it's a lot easier to treat the condition if it is caught early. Over 90% of colon cancer patients are older than 50, with 64 being the average age of diagnosis, which is why people aged 50 and older should start getting regular screenings.
As for primary prevention, experts recommend a diet rich in fiber, particularly wheat bran fiber. Fiber promotes regular elimination and increases fecal bulk, which reduces the colon's exposure to bacteria and carcinogens. Wheat bran is also known to inhibit the growth of polyps, or the precursors to cancer. The average American only gets 15 grams of dietary fiber a day - only half of the recommended daily requirement - but this gap can easily be filled with cereal, which can provide at least 3 grams per serving. Other recommended lifestyle practices include limiting alcohol consumption, reducing smoking, and maintaining a healthy weight regular exercise. Taking an omega 3 fish oil capsule a day can also prevent colonic polyps from developing while promoting cardiovascular health and boosting cognitive functions.
